What is BSI approval?

BSI-recognized security evaluation for IT products

Approval by Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is an official administrative act under the country’s classified information framework. BSI approval is mandatory when electronically storing, processing or transmitting German classified information or state secrets. The BSI evaluates security technologies, encryption methods and implementations against criteria derived from protection profiles (PP) or security targets (ST). Additionally, the trustworthiness of the manufacturer, as well as the processes and supply chains, is verified using defined security requirements. After a successful evaluation, the BSI grants approval up to the required classification level – for example, ‘VS-NUR FÜR DEN DIENSTGEBRAUCH’ (classified for official use only).

Trusted German security through BSI approval

BSI approvals mark verified, robust security solutions that meet Germany’s stringent classified information directive (VSA).
BSI approval confirms that a product delivers reliable protection based on strict governmental standards.

Recognized assurance for high-security environments

BSI approval is a globally recognized mark of high security standards and trust.

How does the BSI approval process work?

The BSI approval process involves a security assessment, often based on internationally recognized standards such as ISO 15408 (Common Criteria). Manufacturers must submit technical documentation, security concepts and implementation details for expert review and testing. After a successful evaluation, the product receives approval as part of the VSA directive, which applies to specific use cases or protection classes. For network operators, BSI approval is a mark of trust that strengthens security compliance credentials with customers and regulators.

Auditable network security

BSI approval supports compliance with legal requirements and boosts acceptance of security products across the public and private sectors.

BSI-approved network security you can trust

Amid rising cyber threats and increasingly strict regulatory requirements, BSI approval is a key quality mark. It provides transparency and trust in deployed technologies, reduces risks and supports the secure digitalization of business processes. For network operators, it serves as strong evidence that an IT security product has been thoroughly tested, is reliable and ready for use, particularly in critical or sensitive environments. Adva Network Security’s ConnectGuard™ Layer 1 encryption technology has received BSI approval for use with classified data, helping secure digital infrastructure in compliance with national standards.
